Happy Dots Mug Rug... when cotton yarn meets macrame brush!

Mug rugs are perfect projects for crochet enthusiasts. They are small and can be made quickly with a small amount of yarn. They are highly practical, serving to protect surfaces from hot mugs and spills. Additionally, they are an ideal last-minute handmade gift that can be given for various occasions, such as housewarmings, as tokens of appreciation for office colleagues or teachers, or as thank you gestures. Plus, they're incredibly enjoyable to create! With an abundance of crochet stitches to explore and a wide variety of yarns available, the design possibilities are endless. I'm delighted to share my idea for a funky and interesting-looking mug rug.

Skill level

This pattern is based on a very simple to make, yet beautiful one row repeat stitch, therefore it's perfect for every crochet beginner. If you know how to make basic crochet stitches: chain, single crochet and double crochet (US crochet terms) you're good to go. Plus like in my other designs instructions are written in a clear descriptive and easy to follow way. I have also provided access to some additional photo and video tutorials so you can master this gorgeous crochet stitch in no time. What's more if you struggle at any point you can count on me. I'm here to help :)

Mug Rug Crochet Pattern by Many Evenings

Size

This pattern was carefully designed to make a set of four standard sized mug rugs out of one skein of yarn. They're perfect for accommodating average size mugs plus some cookies or snacks. The Happy Dot Mug Rug is about 4 inches (10cm) in height and 5.75 inches (14 cm) in width [plus fringe]. Now let's talk fringe... this is actually the most important part of this design. It's bold, distinct and rather unusual in this type of a project. And that's what makes this little rug so special. This macrame-crochet mariage resulted in a very unique mug rug that truly resemble a traditional floor rug. How cool is that :)

Time

Crochet takes time and patience so we all love those quick projects that can be completed in less than 1 hr. Happy Dots Mug Rug is on of them. This tiny mug rug is a great pattern for one evening as you only need about 40 mins to complete it. If you want to make a set of 4 mug rugs, it won't take you longer than 3 hrs! With this easy and repetitive pattern we'r taking about a delightful movie evening :) Only adding fringe and all the finishing touches require a bit more attention and space (flat surface for trimming and brushing the fringe). And that's exactly what makes this pattern a great last-minute handmade gift idea.

Materials needed

For this project you can either use some leftover aran/worsted weight cotton yarn [approx 39 yards] if you only want to make 1 mug rug, or you're going to need about 155 yards (nearly 1 full skein) for a set of 4 coasters. I have used a lovely Shiny Happy Cotton by Wool and the Gang in 101 Spots shade. Feel free to use any other cotton yarn in aran/worsted weight that's good for brushing. You are also going to need a macrame brush or comb.  Brushable cotton yarn and brush are essential for getting this gorgeous fringe. Happy Dot Mug Rug is crocheted with a 6 mm crochet hook (US J/10). A pair of stitch markers and a tapestry needle are also required.
